Motivation

So why do I do this? Why would anyone want to go through the time, effort, pain, tightness, misery, and shoe buying? Well sometimes the short answer is: I can EAT!!!! When I run, sometimes I can burn up to and beyond 1000 Calories.... Still got a little chunk on me, but I am working on it.

Really though... the long answer is how training and running the Marathon is so much about being a caregiver... its about putting in that time, running in circles, feeling alone, getting tired, and ending up in the same place you began in. Alright, maybe that isn't the most motivating thing about running/training, and maybe not the nicest thing to say, but you know what? It does suck being a caregiver. Cancer does suck. You never really win, you just do a little better each time. OK.... Not where I wanted to go with this....

ITS about the long-haul, the commitment, holding on when it sucks, and knowing that probably tomorrow you'll have to get up and do it all over again. All while trying to maintain your normal life and everyday activities. Well, I guess I just want to add my little motivation that makes me always think of my mom who has battled breast cancer and knows the casualties of war. Its a line from "Never Too Late" by Michael Franti and Spearhead:

Don't Fear to walk slow
Don't be a horse race, be a marathon
And don't fear the long road
'cause on a long road 'ya got a long time
to sing a simple song, sing along

And so it begins....

Okay, so I am a little behind....

January is almost over.... and I have yet to post to this blog stating any kind of progress. I have decided to run in the Illinois Marathon as part of my training. I don't plan on doing well in the race, but I am hoping to experiment with "hitting the wall" and food choices the day before and during the race. Well, I prattle on.

I have set up my donation site for the Young Survival Coalition and I am really excited for this year. I want to think about hope this year. The first year was about fighting breast cancer. The second year was about celebration. I hope for a better future for women facing breast cancer.

I want to share that hope with other people. At the Men Against Breast Cancer caregivers conference someone said that "hope is like a country road, it doesn't exist until people travel down it." Every year I begin this journey to train for the Chicago Marathon and every year I build that hope and find out new ways to share the reason I want to hold on everyday even when it is hard. Maybe that is why the marathon really represents the new life that breast cancer has laid out before me. I can run, but it stays with me, everyday is a reminder, it is that choice to finish. It is that effort toward the finish that matters, you may run until you cannot any more, then you walk, crawl if you have to, but finish none the less. Holding on to the hope is what keeps it alive. I have to quote the cartoon Futurama: "You can't give up hope just because it is hopeless, you have to hope even more and cover your ears and go 'BLAH, LA, LA, LA!!!' " --Fry. I guess I would rather hold on to hope without giving in, even if there is no reason to. Hope is where you find it.
